This Christmas Season, Don’t Be Cheated by Holiday Treats

Christmas season is here and so are the holiday treats, exciting events, gifts and treats that go with it. Sometimes the revelry of the holidays brings in unfavorable results if you are not precocious.

For patients with diabetes, enjoy Christmas season and the holiday treats by keeping yourself healthy. Do not be carried away with the tempting treats. Here are the things you can do to avoid letting the holidays damage your health.

Choose the items you like and those healthy foods that you know are good for you. If you are not sure of what shall be served in the party, offer to contribute your own dish which you know shall be healthy not only for you but for everyone as well.

Though you are in a party, do not overeat. Albeit you can plan to enjoy the food, eating schedule shall most likely differ from your usual schedule. However, try to eat the same amount of carbs and protein that you usually do. The Christmas season is when you should be more cautious because of the holiday treats. Remember to take small portions of your favorite treats and sweets.

In order not to ruin your usual eating schedule, it is best to eat before going to the party. This shall keep you from being ravenous. Proteins such as turkey, skinless chicken, eggs, fish or low fat cheese shall aid in reducing food cravings. Also drink plenty of water to dampen your appetite.

Focus on people, not on food. Pay more attention in reconnecting with family, friends and loved ones rather than on the food. After eating, distance yourself from food; and avoid drinking.

If you really tend to overindulge in the Christmas season and its holiday treats, get back to business on the following day. Do your usual eating habits, blood glucose monitoring and exercise.
