Artificial Pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes Control

To prove the effectiveness of artificial pancreas for type 1 diabetes control, studies have been made to compare conventional insulin pump therapy and closed-loop insulin delivery (artificial pancreas) in people with type 1 diabetes and the latter showed more efficiency.

Studies are already ongoing to prove that an artificial pancreas is good for type 1 diabetes control. As we know, the pancreas is an organ that produces insulin. Insulin is the hormone that transports the sugar from the blood to the cells. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, and no one works in lieu of it when the body is in the state of insulin scarcity.

The artificial pancreas is a technology still under study to help diabetics automatically control their blood sugar by providing the substitute endocrine functionality of a well-working pancreas.

Researches and studies were conducted with type 1 diabetics. One of these studies was conducted at the University of Cambridge to compare how safe and how effective overnight closed-loop insulin delivery (artificial pancreas) compared to typical insulin pump therapy in adult diabetics for type 1 diabetes control.

Also, results from two random trials suggested that an artificial pancreas may increase overnight blood sugar control and decrease the risk for evening hypoglycemia in adults. The studies showed proofs that overnight closed loop delivery can be effective and safe to help patients improve their sleep without fear of dropping their blood sugar level during the night.

Boris Kovatchev, PhD of University of Virginia mentioned in an editorial that closed-loop control showed much promise for a research setting. However, advance studies are still under process to improve the lives and health of people with type 1 diabetes.

Logical concepts regarding artificial pancreas are is quite factual but the effects of placing of it are yet to be known. Researches admit that closed loop delivery may open the future for more studies.
