Insulin resistance can be prevented with a good sleeping habit. Our body needs sleep, as much as it needs food and water. Unfortunately, many people of today are sleep-deprived as they try to meet the demands of the current electronic age.
It is an amazing fact to know that insulin resistance can be helped by simply having a good sleeping habit. Many adults do not get enough sleep because of some pressures from work as they try to balance time between work and family – like becoming a good parent or spouse or child and a good employee at the same time. Lack of sleep can open the chance to get many diseases which can eventually result to death.
Six to eight hours sleep proved to be the healthiest of all; lesser than that a night or more than eight hours of sleep a night can lead to type 2 diabetes. This is true for men and women alike.
Too little or too much sleep can lead to metabolic changes. Insulin resistance can be a result of these changes. A bad sleeping – less or more sleep, imbalances the hormones in the body. When tolerance of carbohydrates decreases, chances of becoming obese go higher. Night shift workers usually have sleep problems and are prone to obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and increase risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Results of lack of sleep
Studies show that lack of sleep can lead to poor appetite, increased risk of obesity and lowers the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It is found that workers in the US top the list of people lacking sleep. That is why they have more overweight people than any country.
Sleep and Glucose Tolerance
Many studies show that insulin resistance in diabetics is prevented when the patients increase improve their sleeping habits. This likewise improves their glucose tolerance dramatically. If you can feel or aware that you are at risk of diabetes, give yourself more sleep – at least seven hours per night and at regular times if possible. Never think of trying to make up for nights wherein you lack sleep. Lost hours of sleep cannot be regained. This shall help reduce the risk and improve your body’s overall health.
