Herbal Medicines Most Used by Diabetics

With the availability of herbal medicines nowadays, being less expensive and painless when applied; many people resort to taking them, including diabetics. Their healing capabilities have been claimed by many as more effective, safer and with less or no side effects.

Nature is rich with herbs from which herbal medicines are formulated to help diabetics to manage their disease.

The following are some of the commonly-used diabetes herbal medicines.

Allium cepa (onion)

Dry powder onions showed anti-hyperglycemic activity in rabbits with diabetes. Onions are also known to be antioxidants and are good in controlling blood glucose.

Allium sativum (garlic)
A common recurrent herb, garlic has allicin – a compound responsible for the pungent odor and hypoglycemic activity. Garlic proved to help decrease fasting blood glucose as well as triglyceride levels in serum.

Aloe vera and barbadensis
A common house plant, aloe has a record of a multipurpose folk remedy. Aloe gum extracts are effective to increase sugar tolerance in diabetic and non-diabetic rats.

Acacia arabica (babhul)
Another herbal medicine source is the acacia extract which acts as an anti−diabetic agent by releasing insulin.

Mangifera indica (mango)
Mango leaves are used as antidiabetic agents in the medicine of Nigerian folk.

Azadiracthta indica (neem)
The hydroalcoholic extracts of neem can do anti-hyperglycemic activity and it is antimalarial, anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, antioxidant and antifertility as well.

Bitter gourd momordica-charantia (bitter melon juice)
Bitter melon juice has shown to be very effective to patients with diabetes. It contains a lot of insulin, thus help lower blood glucose.

Vitamin C
Researches found that vitamin C can be good for diabetics when taken with other supplements to help decrease blood glucose levels. It can also help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protects from further complications like heart disease.
Other herbal medicines that are noteworthy are cinnamon, fenugreek, banaba, green tea and many others.
