Visiting a Grocery Store – Remember to Keep the Diabetes Meal Plan Intact

Visiting a grocery store can be quite a challenging situation because you have to remember your diabetes meal plan. Yet, that is not easy when you are already faced with hundreds of tempting food items on shelves coupled with confusing food labels.

If you visit grocery stores, keep in mind your healthy diet or diabetes meal plan. A healthy diet is a blend of foods full of nutrients, low in calories and fats and served in moderate sizes. This is good for everyone – diabetics or not. Grocery stores offer choices to help you manage your diabetes. Note the some of the following tips that can guide you over your diabetes, even in grocery stores.

Breads

“Whole wheat” breads are better as they are high in fiber. “Wheat flour” is lower in fiber. Remember to look for the word “whole” for without it, fiber is less. Go for those that are naturally low in fat.

Produce

Fresh foods are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. Get dark-green and orange vegetables from grocery stores. They are rich in vitamins C, A and folacin; and so are orange fruits. Therefore, they are part of your diabetes meal plan.

Poultry, Meat, Luncheon Meats and Fish

Choose ground meats with reduced fats. However, fats maybe added in ground turkey during processing so it is not lower in fat. Look for less marbling in rump, loin, shoulder, round and leg cuts since they can be lower in fat. Luncheon meats which in per serving contains 3 grams of fat or less are good choices. Meats cut from the rib area tend to be high-fat. For decrease fat, remember to remove the skin from poultry before cooking.

Fruits, Juices and Canned Vegetables

When in grocery stores, choose those which are low in fat and calories for your diabetes meal plan. Canned vegetables are higher in sodium. However, canned peas and beans have enough soluble fiber. Fruits that are canned in water or in their own juice are better than juice drinks and fruits in syrup. The latter have high carbohydrate content. Look for 100% juice without added sugar. They are referred to as “unsweetened”.

The most effective thing is shop in accordance to your healthy diet plan. It maybe difficult at first but making it a habit shall turn that into an easy routine. When that is achieved, visiting a grocery store will no longer a complicated excursion.
