Diabetes Burnout : When Diabetics Get Tired of Diabetes

Having diabetes is different. Diabetes is a disease that needs continuing awareness, management and maintenance for a life-time. Diabetes burnout is imminent. It is no wonder when some diabetics get tired of diabetes.

Diabetes burnout can happen to diabetics every now and then, when diabetics get tired of diabetes. Burning out is when they are tired of sticking to their medical checkup schedules, insulin routine, sugar checks, meal plans, daily exercise and other things that they can already neglect them altogether.

Having diabetes for so long, there is a tendency that the patient gets burnout with management. That makes diabetes a challenging condition. Being conscious on the food and drinks to take, checking blood glucose from time to time, planning physical activities and exercise, taking medications and insulin, managing stress and many more – all these are important parts of diabetes management. Feeling the challenge on days, sometimes you feel tired and discouraged of the never-ending process of diabetes management.

Getting along

If diabetes burnout comes and diabetics get tired of diabetes and it happens for a long period, this can lead to poor self-care and can tremendously increase the risk of complications. Though you find it hard to continue the struggle, you have to think you are not alone as there are many people who are affected with your negligence.

The difference between burnout and depression is that burnout is temporary. The discouragement and fatigue that go with it come and go. They can last for days or weeks but generally get lost when the patient gets support, resources and a renewal of perspective.

When prolonged, burnout can become depression, when sad mood prevails for two weeks at least. Diabetes burnout is less dangerous. It is just a stage when diabetics get tired of diabetes, but when it turns into depression, it can make diabetes management more difficult since the things that were previously enjoyable and interesting do not appear to be as they are anymore.

Causes of burnout and good news

Burnout usually happens to patients who have traits of being perfectionist, stressed, have high self- expectations, taking things personally and many others. Having burnout starts from the patient himself. The good news is that diabetics can always fight back burnout, either on their own or with others’ help.
Right traits, self-motivation and self-respect are very important for the diabetics. He should accept that it is fine to fail sometimes. They should be able to look at unwanted results and can afford to just laugh or shrug them off.
